Knock on wood: Call for collaboration for Gaspésie Magazine
Gaspé, Thursday, October 7, 2021. – From the end of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th , the forest industry played an important role in the Gaspé economy. The next issue of Magazine Gaspésie will look at the various angles of this industry: exploitation, transportation, processing. Several construction sites and sawmills are counted and the great Gaspé rivers are used to transport logs. Knock on wood will retrace this history, that also of the professions linked to it and the memories of life on the construction sites. You are invited to contribute to this issue ( No. 203, April-July 2022) of Magazine Gaspésie by proposing a text for January 7, 2022. The forest environment Due to a lack of roads, the Gaspé hinterland is taking time to develop . However, the forest industry will be an important part of its history, among other things by offering work to many Gaspé residents for nearly a century. Do you know the story of the sawmills that have disappeared or of the Gaspesia factory? Are you interested in the challenges of wood transport? Do you want to talk about Canadian International Paper, present in Gaspé since 1925? Have you studied the Norwegian ships that took delivery of timber cargoes in Haute-Gaspésie in the 1870s? A member of your family was a log driver? Did your grandfather work on logging sites? Want to share your memories? Tell us! The next issue aims to approach the forest industry in Gaspésie from different angles. Do you have ideas and the subject inspires you? Contact the editor to discuss.
