The Musée de la Gaspésie presents Pierre Fortin: Mission Saint-Laurent, a major exhibition devoted to one of the great, long-overlooked figures in the history of maritime Quebec.

A physician, captain of the schooner La Canadienne, member of Parliament, minister, and president of the Legislative Assembly, Pierre Fortin (1823–1888) devoted his life to defending the coastal communities of the Gaspé Peninsula, the North Shore, and the Magdalen Islands. Sailing tirelessly on the St. Lawrence River and Gulf, he fought against smuggling, maritime insecurity, and resource plundering, while bringing the voice of maritime populations to the highest levels of power.

An immersive and visual exhibition

Inspired by the world of comic books, the exhibition offers a dynamic setting that combines giant murals, illuminated display cases, sound and light effects, and several interactive stations. Artifacts, works, and archival documents from the four project partners enrich a lively and accessible narrative designed to appeal to both adults and young audiences.

Through this approach, Pierre Fortin is presented as a true hero of maritime Quebec, a model of commitment, courage, and determination.

A production of the Musée de la Gaspésie, in collaboration with the National Assembly of Québec, the Musée de la Côte-Nord, and the Musée de la Mer.
