Heart's home, by Karine Leblanc, is a fabric and fibre arts installation that showcases the skills women have handed down from one generation to the next.
The installation grew out of a process of mediation with the community. Women members of the Cercle de Fermières de Grande-Rivière knitted and crocheted several pieces, and students at the École secondaire du Littoral made different types of pompons.
The colours and altars were inspired by a trip to Mexico City during El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). During this festival, which the artist was lucky enough to attend, Mexicans make altars to celebrate their loved ones who have passed away. With Heart's Home, the artist aims to recreate this atmosphere and celebrate what is still alive, but vulnerable: the textile heritage of women.
Part of the installation tells the story of what these womenhave symbolically offered me in carrying on their traditions: the power to create with textiles and the pleasure of working as a community. You'll see photos and works thatposition textile art in my current practice.
