Discover the exhibition Religieuses, enseignantes et... scientifiques, co-produced by the Site historique Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the Musée des Ursulines de Trois-Rivières. This exhibition highlights the essential role played by religious communities in teaching science to Canadian girls from the 1830s onwards.
In a dynamic scenography, visitors will discover how the Ursulines and the sisters of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame developed innovative programmes to teach subjects such as botany, chemistry, physics and mineralogy. Fascinating objects from collections of specimens made by teachers and their pupils, or from school museums and science cabinets, are featured throughout the exhibition.
Enriched with texts, artefacts, archive images, interactive games and multimedia content, the exhibition weaves together the past and the present, while highlighting the persistent challenges posed by the under-representation of women in certain branches of science. Four contemporary scientists give poignant testimonies, raising visitors' awareness of current issues. The public is also invited to contribute by sharing their experience of science or leaving a message of encouragement for young girls aspiring to a career in this field.
The Musée de la Gaspésie is adding a unique regional feature to this major exhibition. A space dedicated to the Ursulines of Gaspé will be set up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their arrival.
The project is made possible thanks to Canadian Heritage, through the Museums Assistance Program and the Programme d'aide aux expositions permanentes et itinérantes of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec.
